Coach Perry Hunter Interview
1. Coach Hunter, let’s start by telling me a little about your career path leading to your current position.
I played high school basketball and was a pretty good player at Henryville H.S. I was all conference and all sectional, but when it came time for college basketball, I didn’t know what to do and I wasn’t on any one’s radar. I was offered by a few schools to come and play, but zero money which I understand now more than then. The varsity coach at Henryville asked me in 1992 if I would coach the freshman team and it started from there. I liked it and have bounced around at a few schools until I settled back in at HHS in 1999. I have coached 6th grade, 8th grade, 9th grade, j.v. and varsity as I am entering my 5th year as varsity coach at HHS.
2. You are the head coach at Henryville High School in Henryville, Indiana. Where is Henryville located in Indiana?
Henryville is located on I-65 19 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky in Southern Indiana
3. Tell me a little about the school. How many students are enrolled at Henryville?
Predominantly white school, rural, middle to lower incomes…our students come from homes that don’t always have two parents with college degrees. We are 1A which is the smallest class, but we are at 400 students in the high school which will move us up to 2A when we realign in 2 years.
4. Talk a little about the team you have this season. What kind of size do you have? Depth? Upperclassmen?
I am 6’1 and I actually have 4 guys in the program taller than me which is a first. We lost a lot last year, but have quite a few seniors that did something for us as juniors. I think we will be highly competitive as long as we can make it hard for teams to score and we compete every possession.
5. Give me a couple of kids’ names to keep an eye on this season at Henryville.
Sr. Steven Mayfield, Sr. Taylor Weeks, Jr. Ricky Boyd, Jr. D.J. Carlson, 6’4 Soph. Bradley Everage.
6. Tell me your thoughts on Custom College Recruiting and the ideas behind the company.
I think CCR is a great idea because we have many kids here who could play college basketball, but don’t know what to do or how to get into contact with those schools. I am hoping that CCR cannot only help them out, but help me as well in trying to do a better job in coordinating such efforts for our guys. 7. How do you feel a company like CCR can benefit an amateur athlete in terms of college recruitment?
It would have to help especially those kids that aren’t ranked on all the lists and aren’t getting any attention. It will help the small colleges find players instead of hoping that the D1 dream dies first before they can come in pick up the pieces.
8. Do you feel this is a company that you would send any of your kids to?
I will definitely recommend this company to any of my players who are interested in playing college basketball
9. Coach, I appreciate you taking the time to speak to me today and I wish you the best this season. |
